News that the heritage building, which houses the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) offices, other government offices and a school, will be renovated has excited people in the port town, but getting the many offices to function while renovation work is underway will be a challenge for authorities.

Sources in MMC said this renovation could be a tedious job as none of the offices and institutions can be kept closed to facilitate the renovation work.

“The government offices have various important files and data cannot be kept open on Saturdays and Sundays, while the contractor undertakes renovation work.

When contacted, MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes said the MMC was already working on plans for the renovation works.

“The Municipal School on the first floor of the building can be shifted and renovation works can be taken in phases. One side of the building will be taken up for renovation first, before moving to the other side of the building,” said Fernandes.

“All administration works regarding the MMC building renovation work have been completed and tendering works have also been finalised. The renovation work will be tendered shortly and the work is estimated at Rs 7 crore,” said Fernandes.

“Renovation work will be done in phases, since there are many offices in the basement of the building. We are trying to shift the municipal school in our building to the nearest school premises, so that renovation works could be taken up.”

“We have already put up a proposal and we are awaiting further details in this matter. Other government offices will be functional while renovation is underway. We are trying our best to work out ways to ensure that renovation work does not inconvenience people,” Fernandes added.
